Game Show: Let?s Blame Bob

Dana White, boss of bosses of the UFC, always had a soft spot for Manny Pacquiao. He has called Manny ?one of the best fighters in the world,? in addition to other superlatives, and for good reason. Manny was one of the best fighters in the world. But after his devastating KO loss to Juan Manuel Marquez two weeks ago, no one is saying that any longer, including the former praisemeister Dana White.

Most people, even Pinoys, now admit, albeit with a heavy heart, that Manny got bested, that the best man won, and that Marquez, whatever criticisms, justified or otherwise, have been leveled against him, is a great fighter.

Yet while others are busy praising Marquez for the win, Dana White is busy blaming Bob Arum for the loss.

Pacquiao?s promoter, for reasons too numerous to count, seems to be the consensus favorite dart board. He gets blamed for everything from the sinking of the Maine to the death of Princess Diana. Some of the enmity makes sense. But some of it is off the wall, nothing more than lemming-like behavior. No one ever accused Dana White of being a lemming. He?s his own man. He?s a trailblazer. He?s a leader, not a follower. He is, when all is said and done, the one and only Dana White.

White claims, without any credible evidence to substantiate the claim, that Arum knew Pacquiao would lose his last fight, but went ahead and made it anyway. How White knows what Arum knew is the stuff of crystal balls, tea leaves and Ouija boards.

?Dumbest fight in history,? barked White. ?Bob Arum is a moron. You don?t take that fight, you idiot. Why would you do that fight? It?s all about the money, that?s why. That was a money fight, that?s what that fight was done for. He should have fought Bradley.?

Many felt that Pacquiao should have fought Bradley. That was the bout that cried out for resolution. However exciting Pacquiao-Marquez 4 was, and it was exciting, the end result derailed Manny?s career in a serious way and cast a long shadow over his many accomplishments.

?Bradley?s the fight they should have done,? continued White. ?He would have knocked Bradley out, he would have got his belt back, and now he?s back in the position he should have been in. [Pacquiao?s] one of the best fighters in the world. He goes out and fights Marquez again? Bob Arum is the dumbest promoter in the history of the world.?

Calling Arum a ?moron? and ?idiot? doesn?t exactly further White?s cause. Everything Dana White says needs to be taken with a grain of salt. But that applies, or should apply, to almost everyone and everything we hear and/or read. His fondness for boxing isn?t comparable to his fondness for mixed martial arts; he knows on which side his bread is buttered. Arum is human. He makes mistakes. Still, if history is any guide, he has and continues to do a lot of things right. Maybe putting Manny in with Marquez a fourth time was a grave error. But to call it a money fight is like calling the sky blue or grass green.
