Ask the Champs Email Bag, March 20, 2006

Jose,

How many titles have you won and how long did it take for you to learn how to box.

Thank you

Callum

Callum,

I have won Two MA State titles. One as a welterweight and one as a junior middleweight. Also, a USBA regional title, NABA title, IBO World title and WBA world title. I started boxing at 15 years old and I still consider myself learning the game.

Jose,

If Barrios WBO champ will face Pacman who do you think will win? and what specific advantages both fighter have?

Mike

Mike,

This fight will also be a barnburner and a very good fight to watch. I will give the edge to Pacman because he has the experience in very high intensity fights which this fight would be and has come out victorious except for the draw with JMM. Barrios had a similar war with Frietas dropping him twice, but ended up getting TKO’ed in the last round. Look to see Barrios try to prove himself if this fight ever gets made, which is why it will be a fantastic fight.

Jose,

Who do you think will win in a rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez versus pacman?

marvyn

Marvyn,

I will give the edge to Pacman right now. I do not think the fight will end up being so close either.

Jose,

How is training going for your fight with Garcia? I think it’s going to be an all out war and the guy with the best stamina is going to win it. Have you seen tape on him yet?

Kevin

Kevin,

Training is going very good. You are absolutely right about it coming down to conditioning and for those of you who do not know me I pride myself in conditioning. I have not seen any tapes of him yet, but they should be arriving pretty soon.

Jose,

Who do you think has the skills or speed and power to stop Floyd Mayweather’s run? Can sugar Shane Mosley do it?

Dennis Magcalas

Dennis,

That is a very good question. I think there are a couple of fighters out there who have the power to beat Mayweather. I think Jose Luis Castillo has proven it before in their controversial first fight. Yes, Mosley will be a very good test for him.

Jose,

Again Kudos to the champs! Jose, there have some boxers like George Foreman and Evander Holyfield who might have been past their prime but have recently fought. What do you think is the age of retirement of a boxer? When should one say, enough is enough. What makes them want to try it again one more time even if it could mean one’s life. Is retirement solely based on what the boxer feels? Thanks for posting my previous query.

All the best jo jo

Jo Jo,

This has been a topic of discussion in boxing that has been going on for a very long time. Everybody has a difference of opinion about this situation, but I will put it to you like this. It pretty much has to be the fighter’s choice. Every time we step into the ring we risk our lives no matter what our age, but for some fighters this is all they know and that is too bad. I will give you one prime example of a fighter that should not be fighting anymore and that is Evander Holyfield. Holyfield has grossed over 100 million dollars. He was a former undisputed Heavyweight Champion and the only fighter in history to win the heavyweight title four times. With out a doubt, Holyfield will enter the hall of fame on his first try, when he retires. He is 43 years old and this year he will turn 44. Holyfield has it in his mind that he will become champion again that is what drives him.

Jose,

Is it possible that that pacman would materialize the challenge of MAB. MAB seems to be very busy inserting himself in the pacmans list. If ever this would happen, who do you think will win?

Jun

Jun,

This is a fight that I would love to see. I am glad to finally see MAB being vocal about getting his rematch with Pacman, but I will not believe it until I have heard that MAB and Pacman have signed on the dotted line. If the fight happens I feel that it will be a much closer fight than the first time they fought. Who would win well I guess we just have to wait and see. It is a toss up on my end. Charles,

Who do you think will win if the Pacquiao Barrera fight will happen?

PRING

Pring,

I can’t answer this enough. The fight was exciting on the first occasion, and I don’t think it will fall short of excitement, in the rematch. The outcome depends on the styles both fighters, bring to the ring, on that night. Well, we already know what to expect from Pacquiao, Berrera, has a lost on his record, that he’ll want to avenge, the method he choose to do so, could determined what kind of fight, we’ll see from Barrera.

Charles,

I heard a rumor that now that Joe Calazaghe won, you are coming back to fight him again? Is this true?

Nick

Wow Nick, I just got finished talking to my wife about the rumors, of me returning….to the gym that is. I’ve reached my pinnacle in boxing. It felt good to become a world champion, and I’ve had some very memorable fights and acquired international recognition. Oh yeah, my returning. This week, I returned to the gym, after nearly a year off from the boxing ring, so that I could begin the process of getting back in shape. I haven’t been in the gym a full week and already, I’ve got people thinking that I’m making a comeback. Mentally, sometimes I find myself tempted to do so, but the mentally, which dominates me physically, I clear my head and say, why bother, really, WHY bother. It’s funny, the other day, when I first returned to the gym, I got dressed and proceeded to begin. The first round of shadow boxing was more than enough, for me to say, “to hell with this” I am, an admirer of the sweet science, and will always be, but remaining or returning to the status of an active fighter, I don’t think so!

Charles,

Lately Barrera expresses his desire to fight pacman but we we all know that pacman has a schedule bouts until September and Barrera exactly knows that pacman can’t accommodate him, is it the strategy of Barrera so that he will not be called as a coward? he knows exactly that pacman cannot fight him because of busy schedule and why he express to fight pacman?

jan Mendoza

Jan,

It may not be that way. I’m sure that Barrera is aware of Manny’s busy schedule, but maybe, deep down inside, he feels that Manny will answer his call and give him the rematch. Who knows, sometimes, rematches can make for very good entertainment. Just think about it…Gatti, Ward…1, 2 and 3

Charles,

Do you think that the ref Cotton allowing Rahman to put his left forearm in Toney’s throat for 12 rounds with just one warning in the 9th effected Toney? You just wrote about ref’s and this was a perfect point. Cotton was like no where to be found in this fight. He was invisible. Best forearm I’ve seen since Joe Frazier. And the stiff arm ala Larry Holmes wasn’t bad either on Rahman’s part. Toney came in ill conditioned and paid the price. Doesn’t deserve a rematch.

Ken Hissner

Ken,

No, not at all, in fact, I don’t think it was much of an issue at all. The fight was pretty entertaining. The two fighters, gave each other a lot of respect, and for heavyweights, they both fought at a high output pace. I do think Toney should get a rematch. Toney’s conditioning will always be something to talk about, but he is one of the best in the game today. A true throwback.
