TWO REPRESENTATIVES of boxing superstar Oscar Dela Hoya will hold a press conference today at the Cebu Sports Club in Cebu City in the hope of discovering new talents in the mold of Manny Pacquiao who is now enjoying global-celebrity status.
Matchmaker Eric Gomez and promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, who arrived in the country the other day from Las Vegas, are expected to transact business with Filipino counterparts Tony Aldeguer and Sammy Gello-ani, who have made names in the boxing circle for nurturing the careers of some of the country’s famous fighters.
Both Gomez and Lewkowicz are connected with Golden Boy Promotions, the fledgling promotional outfit owned by Dela Hoya.
The duo plans to recruit and promote top Filipino fighters in the United States.
Filipinos are fast emerging to be a major market in the boxing business after a mammoth Pinoy crowd showed up during the sensational win of Pacquiao over Mexican Erik Morales last January in Las Vegas.
Among the Cebuanos who created waves in the United States were Z Gorres, Czar Amonsot and Jimrex Jaca.
Gello-ani said that a major announcement will be made by Gomez and Lewkowicz that is expected to further heighten the interest among Filipino boxing fans.
Meanwhile, the official weigh-in of the Oriental and Boxing Pacific Federation (OPBF) superflyweight bout between Gorres and his Thai challenger will be held today at the ALA Boxing Gym in Mandaue.
Gorres meets Thai prospect Waenpetch Chuwatana tomorrow night in a 12-round title fight to be held at the Mandaue Sports and Cultural Complex.
Also seeing action is Amonsot, the defending World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific superfeatherweight ruler who will face Thai Decho Bankluaygym in a 10-round non-title fight.
