Sulaiman: Mayweather WBC title decision in early December

WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. may be stripped of his title in just over two weeks if he doesn?t attend the upcoming WBC Convention and explain his position to President Jose Sulaiman.

The 35 year-old, who has yet to defend the title fourteen months since taking it from Victor Ortiz, has been summoned by the WBC to appear in Cancun at their annual event running from December 2nd through to December 8th next month.

Failure to attend the convention would almost certainly mean that interim champion Robert Guerrero would elevated to full title holder, although Mr. Sulaiman is willing to await Mayweather?s position regarding the green belt before any final decision.

?I have not been contacted by Mayweather or by any of his representatives as there is some confusion of who represents him other than Al Haymon,? Sulaiman exclusively told World Boxing News.

?It has been my opinion to have a meeting with Floyd and I am expecting his attendance to the WBC convention, where I would definitely talk with him.

?He has been a good friend and a very loyal WBC champion.?

With Guerrero chomping at the bit to gain his chance at Mayweather after claiming the standby title against Selcuk Aydin, Sulaiman is intent on giving Mayweather every opportunity to arrange a clash with the multi-weight champion.

?It is supposed both to have a voluntary defence,? explained Sulaiman.

?But then (if no agreement) it would be a mandatory fight that will be for sure discussed and decided in Cancun, which is our next convention to be held in two weeks more.

?I prefer to wait for the convention but a decision must be made next month,? he added.

Mayweather?s career currently remains in a state of recess following his incarceration in the summer and whether keeping the 147lb title is high on his list of priorities at the moment is highly doubtful.

?Money? also holds the WBA belt at light-middleweight, which he must defend before May if he wishes to retain possession of the title, although it seems likely that he will give up both titles as he plots his next move.

A fight with Manny Pacquiao remains the most revered fight for the fans, although whispers are now becoming louder that Mayweather could clash with Timothy Bradley in early 2013 after the WBO belt holder’s recent victory over the Filipino.

If this is the case, Mayweather could then save the WBC belt as a unification bout would be on the cards, but the American would still have to explain that fact to Sulaiman at the convention early in December.
