NO PSYCHIC NEEDED FOR “RANK” TOP RANK CARD

Las Vegas, NV-Nobody with any boxing savvy really thought that Manuel Gomez, had much of a chance, if any at all with Antonio Margarito. Turns out, the majority of you were right as the now 33-4 Margarito, he was just too much for the now 28-11 Gomez. Referee Richard Steele stops the contest at 1:14 into the opening round of a WBO welterweight tilt with Gomez dazed and semi-horizontal. The quick two-fisted beating Margarito dispensed was impressive, until you realized it was the pedestrian Gomez being drilled.

VILORIA RIPS FOE TO SHREDS!

Although it took considerable more time to defend the WBC 108 lb. title, than to win it, champion Brian Viloria was successful in his initial defense. Working with a textbook jab, Viloria, now 19-0, used that weapon to open Jose Aquirre, 33-5-1, Mexico, up for a series of punches in every round except the third. Aquirre ran off, and landed some good shots in this three-minute session. With the event being carried by Filipino TV, the Philippine fighter born in Hawaii continues his trek towards superstardom. Scores for Viloria were 116-112, 116-112, & 117-111.

CALEDERON WINS ON POINTS!

Ivan Calderon, Puerto Rico, went to 20 & zip, with a 12 round shutout unanimous decision over Mexico’s Issac Bustos. Two scores read 120-108, while the third tabbed the swift Puerto Rican a 119-109 victor. Calderon improves to 20 & 0, while Bustos is 24-8-3.

CHAVEZ “EXHIBITION” HAD ELEMENTS OF FIGHT

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the son of an icon appeared on the card as well. But seeing he has yet to be in a “real” fight, or anything even remotely close, we will say that he appeared, got paid, and is still undefeated. The fodder was a fellow named Carlos Molina, one whom I dismissed as another real easy mark for Jr. But they had a majority draw with one another, and this one was close as well. Judge Duane Ford had it 58-56, as did Patricia Morse Jarman. Mr. Jerry Roth, the king tabbed the half dozen go around even at 57-57. Julio is 24-0-1, while Molina declines to 12-2-1. What we have here is a fistic version of Frank (Julio) Sinatra Jr., and his great father Frank (Julio) Sinatra Sr. Truth being, Frankie Jr. couldn’t sing much!

ARUM HITS POST-FIGHT SOFTBALL FOR DOUBLE!

Promoter Bob Arum, who was just probably glad the night was over, and that Antonio shined, said in a post fight interview that he has reserved a June date at the Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas. And that he hoped then to match Margarito with the winner of the April 8th Floyd-Mayweather-Zab Judah encounter.

REAL “WORLD” CHAMP TO FACE HATTON!

Some how later this year, it’ll be Mayweather that will most likely facing the winner of the real World welterweight title tiff penciled for early summer. With a 20,000 seat outdoor tent, champion Carlos Baldomir, fresh off whipping the aforementioned Judah, will be meeting World jr. welterweight champ Ricky Hatton.
