THE camp of International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan seems to be taking Filipino challenger Diosdado “Prince” Gabi for granted.
As Gabi is killing himself in training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach in Los Angeles, Gary Shaw, Darchinyan’s new promoter, is already thinking of a fight between his ward and World Boxing Council (WBC) interim flyweight titlist Jorge Arce.
Shaw, who is also the promoter of Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, signed the undefeated Darchinyan only this month and was ecstatic that he got the Armenian-born Australian into his growing list of fighters.
Shaw told a boxing website that getting Darchinyan was “better than finding a diamond” and that he will work to have the world champ fight Arce in the near future.
Even Darchinyan himself is already talking about fighting Arce, although he has to get past against Gabi first to get his wish.
Darchiyan and Gabi square off in a 12-round championship battle on March 3 at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California.
Darchinyan holds an impressive record of 24-0 with 19 KOs, while Gabi will enter the ring carrying a 26-2-2 with 18 KOs slate.
The 26-year-old Gabi hails from Barangay Lasang, Davao City and will be taking his first crack at the world title for the first time.
