Pacquiao inks deal with San Miguel

Boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao has signed a deal with San Miguel Corp. making the “People’s Champ” a business partner of Southeast Asia’s biggest food and beverage company.

“This agreement is in recognition of an excellent athlete who deserves recognition and reward for making our country proud and putting back the Philippines in the world map,” San Miguel President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang said.

Under the agreement, Pacquiao will represent San Miguel as a corporation and endorse San Miguel’s beer products, hard liquors and food products.

Pacquiao earlier endorsed two San Miguel brands: Purefoods and Ginebra San Miguel.

As part of the new endorsement deal, he will tour the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific region to promote San Miguel.

Pacquiao will, in turn, become a “business franchisee” of San Miguel. The company will sponsor the boxer’s personal business ventures, including his concerts, movies and other promotional activities as a singer, actor and performer.

San Miguel will also provide marketing and distribution assistance to Pacquiao’s “MP” product lines.

As boxing sports promoter, meanwhile, San Miguel will support Pacquiao’s next international boxing matches, provide him with life insurance and produce boxing clinic videos to promote boxing as a sport.

Pacquiao won a re-match with superfeatherweight Erik Morales last month, flooring the Mexican boxing legend twice in the 10th round before the fight was stopped.

With that win, Pacquiao is now ranked a top contender and is now eligible to face another boxing sensation, Marco Antonio Barrera, again for the WBC superfeatherweight title.
