Boxing KOs competition on Sunday daytime TV

LET me tell you about a recurring nightmare.

It?s Sunday morning and my throbbing hangover wakes me up. (I subscribe to the tenet that drinking doesn?t cause hangovers, waking up does).

I hear a soulless, warbling sound emanating from a spectral apparition which upon close inspection reveals itself to be the television.

Horror of horrors, it?s DJ Mo on some sort of show, telling us in that spacey, whiny little voice of his that he wants to be a senator someday?

My toxin-riddled brain makes me wish I had the chance to bully him in school?

Egad!! Quick, where?s the remote control? I fumble for it, but my hysterical desperation results in abject failure and I end up changing the channel to a show called ?LUV U.?

Subtitles explain that ?LUV U? is the story of three young girls, who just transferred to Lamberto Uy Villarama University, or Luv U to finish high school there, where they will also experience about the highs and lows of young love? with all the courtships and attempts on their first kiss, the six teen students will learn a very valuable lesson in life?that you cannot get all straight A?s in love…

I feel the bile rise in my throat, and quickly, desperately search for my Sunday fix of boxing and MMA, but in my fugue state, I succeed in changing the channel to ?The Buzz? and then to ?Reel Love Presents Tweenhearts!?

Aargggh! I start to become hysterical and scream out loud.

Thankfully, I am then shaken awake by the wifey who hands me the remote and tells me to stop drooling on the pillows.

Dazed, but relieved I hog the remote control in rapturous glee like it was an Olympic gold medal, and I effortlessly change the channel just in time to hear the ring announcer utter ? and in the blue corner?? Whew!

RATINGS. Back to reality, at the press conference for the launching of Pinoy Pride 16, had ALA Promotions not handed us a tabulation of the latest television daytime rankings, I would not have known that there was such a thing as the Kantar-Media TNS National Household Rankings.

And of course, the boxing fanatic that I am?I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the Pinoy Pride boxing series has consistently garnered high percentiles.

In fact, it is the highest ranked show for 2012 every time Pinoy Pride editions 11 to 15 were shown on daytime Sunday.

The biggest surprise of it all was the trivia that it was Jason Pagara, headlining the recently concluded Pinoy Pride 15 who garnered the highest rating at 16.2 percent when he fought a rematch with Rosbel Montoya.

That?s an impressive statistic considering that world champion Donnie Nietes? defense of his title against vs. Felipe Salguero netted only 14.3 percent while the more popular AJ Banal got 15 percent in his fight against Raul Hidalgo.

FACTORS. Taking into account that Pagara is not an established fighter in the same breath as his more illustrious stable-mates, that says a lot.

But of course, there are several factors to consider aside from the popularity of each particular fighter. Remember that each Sunday is a different playing field, with several shows from rival networks competing against each other.

Thus, Pinoy Pride 15 could also have benefited from excellent timing for the boxing demographic considering that there was probably no other sports show to give it competition that day.

An example would be the Nietes vs. Salguero fight which had to compete with ?Laban ng Lahi Pacquiao Marquez 2? which got also got a 9.1 percent share of the viewership.

Whatever the case, all is well on Sundays, as far as this boxing fanatic is concerned.

Further research confirmed this because the Pacquiao ?Bradley fight last June 10, netted 34.5 percent, while its closest rival was the NBA eastern conference finals with 18.6 percent.

And yes, ?Luv U? was a distant 8 with 8.7 percent.

LAST ROUNDS. Are on my niece Bianca Nicole H. Quijano and my inaanak Aron Ryan Lee who are celebrating their birthdays this week. Cheers!
