Tapales gets big break

P-AND-COMER Marlon Tapales will showcase his talent in one of the biggest boxing events in the Philippines this year as he is slated in the undercard of ?Pinoy Pride XVII.?

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer confirmed yesterday that the 20-year-old ward of Rex ?Wakee? Salud would be included in the fight card for the Oct. 20 event at the SM Mall of Asia Arena that would feature a World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight world title fight between AJ ?Bazooka? Banal and Thai Pungluang Sor Singyu.

?Yes, Tapales is included in the undercard. As of now, we are still looking for an opponent to finalize the contract,? Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu ?We could not decline the request of our good friend Wakee Salud. In ALA, we also would like to help other Filipino fighters,? he said.

Aldeguer said Tapales would most likely be up against an Asian fighter.

Tapales is a promising young fighter with an impressive 19-1 record with six knockouts. He has won 11 straight fights and has beaten the likes of Pan Asian Boxing Association light flyweight titleholder Randy Petalcorin and ?Idol? winner Jerson Mancio. His only loss was a sixth-round technical knockout in 2009 against Brix Ray.

Also featured in the blockbuster boxing event are Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista and Jason Pagara.

Baustista is facing Mexican Daniel Ruiz for the vacant WBO International featherweight crown, while Pagara is defending his WBO International light welterweight belt against unbeaten Miguel Antoine of Barbados.
