DELIVERED — that’s what Manny Pacquiao did. He delivered a power punch to get a technical-knockout victory over Erik Morales. He was superb in his fight.
Determination, focus and patience are his trademarks.
But what I admired most in him was the way he conducted himself in the pre- and post-fight interviews in front of white people, talking in their own language and seen all over the world. He spoke in plain, simple English.
Americans did not mock him for his “carabao English,” but instead loved him.
They understood him, because what mattered most was his performance in the ring, and they let his hands do the talking. This is what America is made of. Act, not talk. Result, not yack.
That’s what our leaders should be — they who talk about so many ideas, who give so many opinions with words that you cannot find in the dictionary, with allusions to ancient times, with phrases from philosophers Plato, Socrates and Aristotle but fall short in putting words into action.
What we need is more Mannys who speak less and produce more results, leaders who can put the plan into action, who not only make promises but fulfill them.
We need more Pacquaio-like leaders in the Philippines who is determined, focused and who can deliver — not necessarily a knockout punch, but services to the people.
