Anecito Gesta, father and co-trainer of Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (25-0-1, 13 KOs) is an epitome of a true fighter and the tireless work that goes behind becoming one. He has devoted his life to the art of combat, practicing various forms of martial arts like Muay Thai, and Kali to name a few.
Currently, his most important involvement in combat sports is in the Sweet Science as he continues to instill in his son the same values he has learned in his lifelong fascination in the arts of fighting. Anecito moved to San Diego from Mandaue City, Cebu earlier this year to join his son’s camp.
“I push him everyday to work harder,” Anecito told this scribe. “There’s so many things he can improve on, and I want him to keep on improving his endurance and stamina.”
Not only does Anecito recognize the importance of a well conditioned warrior, he also wants his to carry as many lethal weapons as he can during combat. “I’ve been sharpening his right hand,” Anecito said, and added, “He’s used to being a southpaw, but I have been developing his right hand, teaching him techniques so he can utilize it more effectively.”

Gesta, the converted southpaw, hasn’t really had much time to develop his overall fighting repertoire. The 24-year-old San Diego transplant did not have the privilege of having an amateur boxing background. Gesta transitioned from his primary sport which was Muay Thai kickboxing to boxing as a way to earn money in his late teens. Anecito guided his son to shift sports after recognizing that kickboxing was far more dangerous, yet paid much less compared to boxing.
On August 3, the father-and-son combo’s progress will be put to the test against a formidable opponent in Ty Barnett (20-2-1, 13 KOs). Anecito believes that they have the advantage in terms of speed, while recognizing Barnett’s punching power. “Their power cancels each other out, but I think Mercito will be faster, and if we do things right, he is capable of scoring a knockout win,” said Anecito.
