My initial reaction to smallish Josesito Lopez landing a Sept. 15 world junior middleweight title bout against Golden Boy’s new Golden Boy, 21 year old Canelo Alvarez, was decidedly negative. But, on second thought, although Lopez will surely give a courageous peformance in the second most important bout of the Mexican Independence Day Weekend bouts (paling in comparsion to JC Chavez Jr. versus Sergio Martinez on HBO PPV TV about a mile away from ther MGM Grand Hotel & Casino), I think the promoter is making the right match at the right time. The Goldens are properly rewarding the 27 year old Lopez for his magnificent upset of Sometimes Vicious Victor Ortiz and that is certainly a small piece of justice.
After all, many assumed that Lopez would be nothing more than a strenuous workout, a warmup for Ortiz vs. Alvarez. Lopez flipped the script and, while he will be dwarfed in the ring by Carrot Top Canelo, he will bring all he’s got. We certainly know his chin is rugged and he fights like a hungry pit bull apporaching a juicy lamb chop. Is this fight equal in stature of Son Of The Legend Chavez and ex-bicycle racer Maravilla? No, and that’s why the Argentina-Mexico bout is on PPV and the Mexican versus Mexican American matchup is on the CBS network. But why can’t fight fans embrace both events. If you’re a baseball fan, you don’t have to restrict your gamewatching to either the American or National League. Let’s hope this is a banner night for boxing and that both shows prosper. But hating on the Goldens and saying they’re overly protective of Cash Cow Canelo is pointless. Me, I like both fights. So sue me… ***** Not knocking Amir Khan but does he knows the difference between a world title fight and a national freak show? Khan keeps blabbing about how his Saturday night title defense against Philadelphian Danny Garcia is a bigger deal than the Del Boy Chisora-David “Toemaker” Haye heavyweight rumble in England. Khan is not entirely wrong. To the thimble-sized, miniature world of boxing nuts, yes Garcia-Khan is a big deal. But Chisora-Haye is a UK circus act and will be avidly watched by millions of Brits who don’t know or care about Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko. PT Barnum should be co-promoting this one with Fearless Frank Warren. In the latest blast, Chisora’s trainer, who claimed he recently assaulted his own fighter, is saying he believes Del Boy to be autistic. He said autistic, not artistic. It’s not exactly a Royal Rumble but, even Khan should confess it, Chisora-Haye is must see TV. Besides, I’ve seen nothing about the Luxembourg Boxing Federation sanctioning Amir against the American, have you?
