WANTED more Manny Pacquiaos.
The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap) is looking for more boxing superstars following the success of Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao in his bout against Mexican boxing legend Erik Morales in Las Vegas last week.
Abap president Manny Lopez said in the weekly “Kapihan sa Sulo” forum Saturday that his group is developing more boxers so that the country can gain even more recognition in the world boxing arena and ultimately produce the country’s first Olympic gold.
Lopez said the Abap is optimistic that after the success of Pacquiao, more young Filipinos will be interested in boxing.
Since the Abap was created in 1986, there were only 400 boxing amateurs being trained but now, there are already 4,000 of them.
Since Pacquiao began achieving a string of successes in boxing, Lopez said the number of those interested in boxing has doubled.
Lopez urged other politicians to support the boxing association so that it can produce more successful boxers in the future. (JPM/Sunnex)
