Wage war on greed to find peace

OUR country needs events like the convincing win of Manny Pacquiao over Erik Morales to unite all of us. It’s been a wonderful respite from the political bickering that always makes it to the headlines. I just hope the Pacman fever lasts.

Pacman won by discipline and hard work and by following his trainors’ strategy. We, too, need some strategies in order to keep our country going. The problem is that anything anti-government makes it to the headlines even if it is all speculations, and it goes on and on, such that truth is lost.

But there are so many good things happening in our country that deserve the headlines as much as Pacman’s victory. The large headlines are sometimes also deceiving, unless one takes the trouble to read the whole article, something that perhaps only a few bother to do.

I also subscribe to IHT and they gave some wonderful news about us last Jan. 12, which unfortunately very few of our countrymen must have read. A “balikbayan” [visiting foreign-based Filipino] relative came home a few weeks ago and remarked at how impressed she was at our country’s development. A very refreshing statement that ignited some patriotic flame in me.

I’ve been trying to think why some politicians always vie for the presidential seat when there’s already someone there. Is it an innate chauvinistic attitude? We must admit that our President is trying her best in spite of all the bickering. Why not give her some peace and just start fighting for the presidential seat when her term’s end is near?

We just celebrated the feast of our Lady of Peace. Let’s ask her for peace for the world, for our country, for our families, and for ourselves. We can only have peace when we make war on our greedy ambitions and selfishness.
