Moments ago at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. carved out a systematic 7th round TKO over a game but outgunned Andy Lee.
The fight was fought at a brisk pace early but Chavez?s ripping shots to the body began taking their toll on the brave Irishman. In the seventh a battered Lee began taking a volley of punches on the ropes as referee Laurence Cole jumped in to halt the action.
Speaking to HBO?s Larry Merchant after the fight, Chavez Jr. pointed out that he could have performed better had he not been hampered physically.
?I could have knocked him out earlier if it wasn?t for my legs,? Chavez stated.
There had been rumors of Chavez facing off with Argentina?s Sergio Martinez on September 15th and it?s a fight the young champion is open to.
?I?ll knock him out too,? exclaimed Chavez.
Expect more on Chavez in the coming hours.
