Undefeated ring legend Floyd Mayweather Jr took a lot of heat from certain fans and even from some boxing insiders when he called for boxing to clean itself up. Mayweather has been calling for Olympic style steroid testing in order to help clean out any potential cheaters in the sport.
Mayweather took quite a bit of heat for it, but now with the recent news of Andre Berto testing positive, his calls aren’t so crazy after all.
Recently Lamont Peterson also tested positive, but that was for testosterone and he suffers from a medical condition that requires him to have to take it. In Peterson’s case, it’s not cheating.
The full story still isn’t in on the Andre Berto situation, so all of us should reserve judgment before all of the facts come out. There’s a good chance that Berto didn’t even know what he was taking. This may be the case, but that brings up another issue.
Fighters at some point need to research and know what they are taking. They need to be dialed into what they take and they need to ask questions. Fighters need to research what’s legal and what’s not legal.
Floyd Mayweather was called a coward, and he was accused of ducking Manny Pacquiao. Floyd truly feels that Pacquiao takes steroids and it’s a part of why Floyd is demanding of Olympic style testing. Floyd has been around a long time, he knows that the sport has people within it that cheat.
It’s important to point out that Manny Pacquiao has never failed a test, nor should he be lumped into the category of cheaters. Floyd’s opinion of Pacquiao is just that, an opinion. There’s no evidence or proof of any wrong doing by Manny Pacquiao. That said, Floyd’s call to clean up the sport should be taken much more seriously.
