Slip of the tongue
Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank Promotions, couldn’t help but laugh at himself when he misspoke during the introduction of Timothy Bradley’s manager at a news conference Wednesday.
?I’d like to introduce Cameron Diaz,? said Arum before pausing to correct himself. ?Cameron Dunkin. I wish he looked like Cameron Diaz.?
Arum likely made the mistake because the ravishing Hollywood star has the same first name as Bradley’s manager and the same last name as his trainer, Joel Diaz.
The crowd at the Hollywood Theatre cracked up, and Arum’s face turned red as he laughed hysterically at himself. After a 15-second pause, Arum composed himself and introduced the rest of Bradley’s team.
Good behavior
Reality television is renowned for its obscenity-spewing, bad-behaving stars such as Snooki on ?Jersey Shore? and New York Jets coach Rex Ryan on ?Hard Knocks.?
But Arum praised Bradley and Pacquiao for reversing that trend in the HBO series ?24/7,? which has been airing in the run-up to Saturday’s fight.
?It just demonstrates to the country, to the viewers, that you can have great, interesting and compelling television without necessarily having a whole slew of foul-mouthed language to try to make an event interesting,? Arum said. ?You don’t need vulgarity to sell, and you can sell with decency, and you can sell by developing other aspects of the lives of these two fine young men.?
Topics explored on recent episodes of ?24/7? include how Bradley is devoted to his family even when he is training and how Pacquiao has rededicated himself to his Christian faith.
The final episode will be broadcast at 6 p.m. Friday. Holy war
One of the distractions that nearly derailed Pacquiao in his last fight was reports of marital problems. Since that time, Pacquiao has found religion and appears to have patched up his marriage.
Even before the marriage problems surfaced, Pacquiao had problems with focus. Being a congressman in the Philippines and singing musical concerts, Pacquiao had multiple interests.
