It’s a veritable tsunami of cliches today (Friday) and in the next few days as Floyd Joy(less) Mayweather Jr. begins his 87 days in a Las Vegas jail cell.
As someone who goes to jails about twice a week as a criminal defense attorney, I can assure you that, whether it is breezy Rikers Island or the Brooklyn House Of Correction, being in the slammer is not big fun. With Mayweather thus not being able to watch nemesis Manny Pacquiao take on young Tim Bradley on June 9 on the other end of The Strip, let’s examine some of the worthless pontifications you will be hearing and reading in reaction to Mayweather serving out his “Baby Mama Drama” sentence:
1. JAIL AS A REFLECTION CENTER FOR FLOYD: Bunch of balogna. What’s to reflect on, that no man should ever assault any woman? Didn’t we all learn that in grade school?
2. MAYWEATHER CAN PONDER HIS FISTIC LEGACY: This is a matter of massive ego overuling common sense. If Mayweather’s undefeated status is, in his mind, jeopardized by a Pacman fight, gthen the fight won’t happen. And if he won’t split the money 50-50 with the Pinoy Idol, why should it happen? Does anyone think that deep reflection will lead “Money” to come out of his cell and announce that he will take 49 percent and give Manny 51 percent? Of course not. Advertisement
3. LET THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME: If Mayweather wasn’t such a big money contributor to the wobbling Vergas economy, do you think he would’ve been given such a lignht sentence? Baby Mama Jose Harris and their three children are reported to have left LV and moved to Southern California which is, I suppose, punishment enough for Floyd who, by all accounts, is a doting father to all his kids. I certainly don’t doubt that.
4. FLOYD WILL EMERGE FROM JAIL A BETTER MAN: Ridiculous also. This isn’t a personal makeover center he’s moved into, it’s a tiny jail cell. Mayweather is not a serious felon, a repeat violent offender or any kind of hardened criminal. His pal, rapper Fifty Cent, has a worse record than he does. Mayweather is Mayweather and will remain Mayweather once that prison door opens up at the end of his less than three month term.
Many of you wish Mayweather hell.
Personally, I wish him well. He did the crime, now he does the (abbreviated) time. End of story.
You can bet that someone inside, be it a guard or another jailbird, will be giving him updates on how Pacquiao fares against Bradley.
