BOXINGTALK STAFF PREDICTIONS: SAUL ALVAREZ-SHANE MOSLEY

Stephen “Breadman” Edwards: Alvarez survives an early rally from Mosley and wears him down and makes Mosley’s trainer Naazim Richardson stop the fight.

John McCormick: Alvarez by decision. Mosley may have some early success but will feel Canelo’s power shortly thereafter and will go into survival mode. Canelo will outwork him down the stretch and will lose a wide margined decision.

Greg Leon: Mosley by late stoppage. My mind tells me Mosley is done, shouldn’t be fighting, and is dog meat for Canelo, but my heart tells me he’s going to pull this one off. Mosley is undefeated against top Mexican fighters (Fernando Vargas x2, Oscar De la Hoya x2 and Antonio Margarito) and I don’t think Alvarez is as seasoned as any of those guys were going into their fights with Mosley. Mosley has to be motivated, knowing that his former “partners” are attempting to sacrifice him to Alvarez to enhance his star by putting a hall of fame name on his ledger.

Scott Shaffer: Mosley’s 2010 draw with Sergio Mora and his attempt to quit vs. Manny Pacquiao due to a sore foot tell me what I need to know. If Mosley fights to survive, he can go the distance, but if he fights to win, I think he gets stopped. Mosley’s only chance is to win in the first four rounds.

Doveed Linder: Alvarez by decision. It?s not just that Shane Mosley is past his best, he looks as if he has completely given up on himself. He?s lost that warrior?s spirit, but I think he has enough experience and athleticism to survive. It would take a real animal to stop Mosley. Alvarez is a strong puncher and a good finisher, but he fights in spots which will allow Mosley time to rest and stay out of harms way. The first few rounds might be close, but I see Mosley going into somewhat of a survival mode around the fourth or fifth round and making it to the finish line.

Rob Soucy: I vividly remember Alfonso Gomez being able to hit Canelo cleanly in a back-and-forth battle until Alvarez got the stoppage. I also remember Jose Miguel Cotto having Alvarez in serious trouble in the first round after a big right hand. Even an “old” Shane Mosley is much better than those two fighters. If Alvarez is as easy for Mosley to hit as Margarito was, this could be a war. Canelo should be bigger, stronger, and has extremely heavy hands which means Mosley has to make Alvarez feel his power early. Alvarez is already talking about fighting Mayweather and Shane knows it. I predict Mosley has one more great performance left in him against the right opponent and Alvarez will be that guy. Sugar Shane by early knockout.
