On Monday evening, Osman Rodriguez of BoxingScene.com reported that a proposed Nonito Donaire/Brandon Rios double header will likely end up landing at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 30th.
Rios is coming off of a split decision over Richard Abril on April 14th and will be making the move to 140 pounds for his next assignment while Donaire will be looking to make his first defense of the WBO junior featherweight crown that he won from Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on February 4th. At certain points, there had been talk of both Rios and Donaire taking part in a July 14th show at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas but that event now looks to be off. Adding another subplot to the news, trainer Robert Garcia, who works with both Donaire and Rios, informed me that Nonito will be moving his training camp back to the Bay Area of California in the lead up to his next ring endeavor. Prior to the Vazquez fight, Donaire had been training at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas but Garcia feels that a move back to the Undisputed Gym in San Carlos, where Donaire has spent several camps, is a welcome change.
?Too many distractions, too many friends,? Garcia said of Donaire?s time in Las Vegas. ?I?m actually very pleased that he will be going back to Northern California.?
Once again, Garcia will be dividing his time between his fighters, as he will work with Rios and several other fighters at his personal gym in Oxnard while traveling to the Bay Area on the weekends to work with Donaire. Garcia says he plans on being with Donaire for three days a week, which means his schedule will then likely see him with the Fil-Am champion every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of the week.
