Adrien Broner has been called many things in his young boxing career. Broner has been called cocky, arrogant, conceited, absurd, and the list of names goes on and on. In fact, most of the names that he is called usually end up being synonyms of the name that first came to mind. I for starters view Broner as a very confident young man that truly believes that no one in his weight class, or no one sniffing around his weight class can beat him. Broner is currently 23-0 with 19 knockouts, has cat like speed and reflexes, has power in both hands, has incredible tools that seem to get sharper by the minute, and the scary thing is that Broner has not even begun to scratch the surface. Many fans out there, including myself, have called Broner a Floyd-lite type of boxer.
I mean, it?s not hard to see why one would draw comparisons to the pound for pound king, the pull back counter right hand, the defensive shell stance, the flashy boxing trunks attire, and the wonderful gift of gab. The comparisons may not all stop there, but thing is that, just like there is only one Jordan, there is also only one Kobe. There is only one Ali, only one Floyd Mayweather, and there shall only be one Adrien Broner. There is no way to truly predict whether Broner will be able to capture the audience in the manner that Floyd can, or if Broner will be viewed as a Roy Jones flamboyant like boxer that has all the skills in the world but can?t quite bring the masses to the sport. The past is the past, and the future is untold, the present is a gift which is why it?s called the present, so one should embrace Broner now and appreciate him now, because as of right now Broner is boxing to be the best that he can possibly be, and you have got to respect that.
First of all I really appreciate the call so it?s very much appreciated, first question I have for you is, who are some of the fighters that you looked up to when you were first coming up in the amateur ranks?
AB- There was a few out there, but I would have to say my man Rau?shee Warren and Ricky Williams, I came up with them two so that?s who I followed.
You are a young champion that is a very good boxer and you have absolutely no vocal constraint to you. Many fans out there view you as being cocky, do you hear that a lot?
AB- Listen, It?s not that I am cocky, it?s just that I am very confident. I am very confident in my abilities.
Because of it being only natural for those looking in to confuse your confidence with cockiness, it then seems to almost force them into drawing comparisons with yourself and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Does it bother you when you hear someone say that you are trying to be too much like Floyd?
AB- No, it doesn?t bother me at all. I am who I am. I love when they compare me to the best in the game, especially, because I have only been in this game for such a short time.
Speaking of being who you are and always saying what?s on your mind, you to me are one of those cats that think out loud so in return you tweet out loud. I must say that you and Hylon Williams got me cracking up with your tweets sometimes. It?s crazy, so what?s up man, I haven?t seen you on twitter lately, what?s going on?
AB- [laughing] Man, I had to shut my twitter down for a while, had too much going on. But I?m back on there now, so once again it?s on.
May 19th on the Peterson/Khan card is what I am hearing as your next fight date, do you know who you will be fighting on that date yet?
AB- They don?t have an opponent inked for me yet, but May 19th is the date. So I?m going to make it do what it do.
Later this year, I would love to see you face someone like Vicente Escobedo at 130 or even a Robert Guerrero at 135. What?s your take on those fights?
AB- I would love to fight Escobedo or Guerrero or whomever. I would love to fight any of the top guys for that matter. At the end of the day, I?m going to make easy work be easy work.
Man your confidence is on a higher level than most, I love it. I got to say that I view you as the next star that will one day take over the throne as not only one of the best fighters out there, but also a pay per view type of following as well. My only real concern with that, is that in doing so it can turn into a Jordan and Kobe type of thing. When Jordan was in his last year in the league, Kobe was starting to really take off as the next face of the sport. With so many people having so much love for Jordan, the masses just were not ready for anyone else to now occupy the top spot, almost as if the fans wanted to hang on just a little bit longer. How much pressure does it put on you that like it or not, that Floyd, the current pay per view king is a few fights away from bowing out gracefully and leaving it all in your hands?
AB- I hear what you are saying, but listen man, there is no pressure over here, no pressure on this side. I feel no pressure at all. I work hard, so through my hard work I?m gonna stay on top.
