I’m sure I’m not the only one confused as to exactly what Andre Dirrell is doing? His business moves with Floyd Mayweather leaves some of us in the dark. Within the last few months we witnessed Andre Dirrell come back after a long lay off to face Darryl Cunningham in which he won by KO in the second round. We learned that his contract was up with Gary Shaw Promotions. Most observers wondered who he would sign with next. It didn’t take long for that answer to come back. Andre Dirrell announced his own promotional company Team Dirrell Promotions who is overseen by his Uncle and Trainer, Leon Lawson Jr.
I want to say that was the big shocker but it wasn’t. Also in the same announcement was the separation of long time Adviser Al Haymon. Mouths had dropped everywhere. Al Haymon has made his fighters millionaires both inside the ring and out. He has not only helped all his fighters make money, but also show them how to invest it outside of boxing. Mr Haymon knows that boxers don’t have a long career and he mentally prepares them for their exit out of the sport one day. No Gary Shaw, No Al Haymon, and now all he has is his name and Team Dirrell Promotions. Now the twist. It’s being reported that he is signing a deal with Mayweather Promotions.
This is the main part that confuses everyone. Why would you form Team Dirrell Promotions and then “Sign” to another Promotional company? Why would you drop Al Haymon but sign to a Promotional Company in which Al Haymon helps oversee? It’s like Andre Dirrell is doing a complete 360 degree turn but instead of being signed to Gary Shaw Promotions your signing to Mayweather. Is Team Dirrell being dissolved? I guess it’s kinda like the music business, where you have the powerhouse Universal, but at the same time you have your “little” imprint to try to squeeze a little more money in your pocket. No matter how much talent a singer has, they cannot truly make it unless they have a large record Company behind them and Distribution. In this case, Mayweather has HBO backing him, that’s the Distribution. Time will tell exactly what’s going on and where this is going. Stay Tuned ….
