Moments ago in Cancun, Quinta Roo, Mexico, former champion Jorge Linares suffered a shocking loss when he was upset by Sergio Thompson at 2:27 of the second. If successful, Linares was to be eyeing a July 7th rematch with Antonio DeMarco but now that fight is likely up in smoke.
DeMarco defeated Linares in an outstanding bloodbath last October, overcoming an early lead and forcing a referee?s stoppage in the eleventh round. Linares fought so well in that fight, however, that people were anxious to see a rematch between the two.
Thompson was game from the start and appeared to stun Linares in the first. Thompson turned up the pressure in the second and dropped a dazed Linares, who then saw the fight waived off after a ringside physician declared that a nasty cut above his left eye.
With the loss, Linares now sees his record drop to 31-2 with 20 knockouts and will have to go back to the drawing board.
