VETERAN Michael Domingo is in for a career-defining fight, one that would determine if it?s time for him to retire.
Domingo will fight for the vacant International Boxing Organization bantamweight crown, a world title belt from a minor boxing organization, against one of the elite in the 118-pound division, former world champion Joseph Agbeko, in Ghana on May 26.
?If I win the title, I will continue to fight but if I will lose then maybe it is time for me to retire,? Domingo told Sun.Star Cebu.
?I have a huge chance of beating him because of his style. I?m very confident in this fight,? he said. ?The preparation is still long and I?m going to train very hard.?
Despite 62 grueling fights as a pro, the 32-year-old Domingo admitted that he doesn?t feel like he has been slowed down bit. It was apparent that he still has the magic touch with his first-round destruction of fellow veteran Marvin Tampus, who is three years younger, last Saturday night in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. Domingo connected with a left uppercut that sent Tampus grimacing in pain on the canvas in just the first round.
Domingo nearly lost his chance to fight for a title because he was told by his handlers to retire after a heartbreaking unanimous decision loss to former world champion Drian Francisco late last year.
?I really wanted to continue boxing. Sir ALA (Antonio Lopez Aldeguer) advised me to retire but I begged him for this opportunity to continue fighting,? said the Sultan Kudarat-born fighter.
