MANILA, Philippines ? After receiving peanuts in winning the World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight title in Thailand, newly-crowned champion Sonny Boy Jaro will earn a hefty paycheck when he makes a mandatory defense against toprated Toshiyuki Igarashi in June.
Jaro just took $10,000 in dethroning Thailand’s Pongsaklek Wonjongkam last Friday and it is not fat-fetched if the 29-year-old Jaro gets a guranteed purse of $200,000 in his first defense of the WBC 112-lb throne.
Aljoe Jaro, who manages and trains the new champ, told the Bulletin that they have the right to impose their will and dictate the terms since the coveted title is with them.
“If they want the fight to be staged there, then they have to give us a reasonable amount for fighting in their territory,” said Jaro, the manager cum trainer.
Jaro said he doubts if Igarashi is willing to fly to Manila to challenge Jaro but if the Japanese is amenable to fight on local shores, he has to be satisfied with a small purse.
Japanese fighters rarely fly out of their country to strut their stuff and because they have the financial wherewithal to promote, they opt to stay and defend their titles or import their foes.
Igarashi fights under the Teiken Promotions of boxing impresario Akihiko Honda, who brought Mike Tyson to fight at the Tokyo Dome twice in 1989 and 1990.
Jaro, the fighter, has a 34-10-5 mark with 24 knockouts and his victory over Wonjongkam also awarded him The Ring magazine belt.
While his next fight is still in the drawing board, Jaro will try his best to remain fit in preparation for the start of his training in April.
Jaro said his fighter wants to defend the title two more times this year and then stay as busy as possible in 2013.
