WENG Haya?s dream of a world title shot has been shattered after Jose Ocampo knocked him out last Sunday night in a free boxing event by SGG Promotions at the Cebu Coliseum.
The 22-year-old Ocampo captured the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific super featherweight crown after stopping the up-and-comer Haya in the 2:26 mark of the fourth round.
Ocampo, a former WBO Oriental lightweight champion, unleashed a barrage of combinations who sent Haya to the canvas twice in the third round. The 22-year-old Cebuano, that gave WBO featherweight king Orlando Salido a run for his money, was caught with vicious left that ended his world title hopes. Haya was promised a rematch with Salido if ever he won the crown.
Ocampo improved to 15-5-1 with 10 knockouts, while Haya dropped to 15-5 with eight knockouts.
Rey Labao (22-4, 14 KOs) dethroned RP lightweight champion Jay Solmiano (11-2-1, 7 KOs) with an impressive first round finish. The bout was waived in the 2:37 mark after the referee saw Solmiano was still staggering on his feet after standing up from a knockdown.
Former world title contender Ciso Morales (16-2-1, 9 KOs) stopped Joash Apericio (8-7, 6 KOs) in the fourth round. Morales was declared the victor after Apericio couldn?t continue because of an unintentional low blow.
In the undercard, Virgilio Silvano (9-2-1, 4 KOs) demolished Roque Lauro (5-10-1, 1 KO) in three rounds. After being awarded by the Sportswriters Association of Cebu just last Saturday for his accomplishments last year, former amateur standout Jack Tepora (1-0, 1 KO) had a successful ring debut with a first-round stoppage over John Edu Torbiso (0-3-1). Jessie Cris Rosales (7-0-1, 2 KOs) destroyed Elmer Colve (5-18-2, 2 KOs) in just 39 seconds of the first round. Rennel Fletchero (6-1, 3 KOs) edged out Marlo Pasigna (1-2, 1 KO) via a close majority decision; and Jasper Buhat (1-0) defeated Jovan Mu?oz (0-2) also by majority decision.
