Domingo must win, or talk retirement: Aldeguer

LAST year Michael Domingo?s handlers, ALA Promotions, were pondering on letting the 32-year-old battle-scarred veteran hang up his gloves after seeing him suffer a heart-breaking unanimous decision loss to fellow Filipino Drian Francisco.

However, ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer had a change of heart and has given Domingo another shot at chasing his dream of a world title shot.

But before a world title fight, whichhas eluded Domingo for so many occasions in his long rollercoaster career, it would be a gradual process that will start with an eight-round fight against tough Filipino journeyman Marvin Tampus, 27-14-2 with 18 knockouts, on this Saturday in the undercard of ?Pinoy Pride 12 ? Bakbakan sa Bohol?, headlined by a 10-rounder between Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista and Genaro Garcia, at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

?He has to win (against Tampus), and much better if impressively,? Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

If Domingo, 43-16-2 with 22 knockouts, will get past Tampus then he will be in an International Boxing Organization bantamweight title bout with former International Boxing Federation bantamweight titleholder Joseph Agbeko on May 26 in Ghana.

?Yes it?s a go but it would depend on Domingo?s performance on March 3,? said Aldeguer.

Agbeko, 28-4 with 22 knockouts, is considered among the boxers in the upper echelon of the bantamweight division and a win over him could change the tide of Domingo?s career and may earn him a possible world title shot before he calls it a career.

?This would be his last year to show what he can do. If he doesn?t make it, then maybe we may discuss retirement and see if he wants to train young fighters. The fight with Agbeko for the IBO title is the key to his career.?
