Mailbag: Trainer Freddie Roach marvels at his new-found reality-TV celebrity

Trainer Freddie Roach laughed and said that when he was first approached about a reality show on his life, he couldn?t understand why.

?I just said, ?You know, my life isn?t all that interesting. Why would anyone want to see a reality show on me?? ? Roach told Yahoo! Sports. ?And to be honest with you, I still wonder about that.?

The fourth episode of ?On Freddie Roach? aired Friday and it featured a dispute between Roach and his assistant (and ex-girlfriend), Marie Spivey.

Roach had the entire series on DVD before it aired, but said he has chosen ?to watch it like you guys, as a fan.? And he said he was bemused by the scene of him at a table in a Las Vegas restaurant arguing with Spivey.

?I was rough on Marie at times, but that happens,? Roach said. ?She?s very close to me and I?m rougher on people who are close to me than I am on those who aren?t. It was a little strange seeing that, but that?s kind of how things go with us.?

Roach said he wasn?t bothered by having cameras with him everywhere ? there are scenes of him sleeping and waking up, turning off the alarm clock ? because he?s been involved in the filming of HBOs ?24/7? documentary series so many times.

He said he gets approached every day by fans who watch the show and he?s amazed by how much they remember from it. One man approached him in a New York restaurant Sunday and said, ?I do what I do and do what I love,? a line Roach used in the show.

?If people like seeing that and it helps out [boxing], I?m fine with it,? Roach said. ?What it is about me that is so interesting, I don?t know, but if people get a kick out of it, hey, I don?t mind. It?s good at least in the sense that it brings attention to this sport and shows what some of the fighters do to get where they are.?
