Sonsona KOs Fulgencio, Argentine Next

LAPU-LAPU CITY ? Power is indeed a great equalizer.

Marvin Sonsona toppled long-armed Carlos Fulgencio of the Dominican Republic with his favorite weapon ? the left uppercut ? late Saturday night to remain on track for a world title crack at the Hoops Dome.

After pounding Fulgencio?s body in the early rounds with hard shots and hardly connecting with a clean shot to the head, Sonsona unleashed that same old, reliable weapon that has helped him boost his record to 16-1-1 with 13 knockouts, sending his visiting foe to the floor as though he had been struck on the head with a baseball bat.

Referee Tony Pesons administered the count on Fulgencio, who waited until it reached nine before deciding to get up in the scheduled 10-round featherweight match.

Pesons, however, was convinced that allowing the Hispanic puncher to continue fighting was tantamount to sending him through the meat grinder, signaling the fight to end at 1:41 of the fifth round.

?He would have gone down anyway had I allowed him to continue so I stopped it,? said Pesons shortly after pulling the plug on Fulgencio?s bold bid.

Fulgencio showboated before the roof caved in on him much to the delight of the small but highly-appreciative crowd.

Despite the explosive ending, Sonsona said he is still operating on 70 percent.

?Hindi pa tayo 100 percent,? said Sonsona, who is set to return to action underneath a headliner starring interim interim International Boxing Federation light-fly titleholder Johnriel Casimero on May 13 at the Waterfront Hotel-Lahug in nearby Cebu City.

Sonsona said an Argentine banger is being lined up to test him.

But before Sonsona is sent to the lion?s den, he has to make himself even more competitive and in flawless physical form since it didn?t appear he was in such terrific shape owing to the flab in his body.

Apparently, Sonsona admits he is still far from his old, deadly form and assures his fans and followers not to worry.
