Here we go again. Floyd Mayweather recently tweeted out to his millions of followers that New York Knicks new star basketball player Jeremy Lin is a good player, but the reason he gets all of the hype is because he is Asian. He goes on and says that black players do what Lin does every night but they never get praised. Really?
I’m not sure how to react to this and to do so in a respectable manner. Firstly Mr Mayweather, if you watch NBA basketball as much as I do, you should know better. What you said is completely insane. African American players are praised on a daily basis in the NBA.
I can remember when former New York Knicks shooting guard John Starks slammed dunked over Michael Jordan in the 1993 Knicks Vs. Bulls playoff’s game. Marv Albert, the legendary commentator came out of his seat praising Starks on the spectacular move that electrified Madison Square Garden. It’s a real shame that color is brought up. Jeremy Lin is a basketball player. He is a basketball player who just happens to be Asian. Who cares what color he is? Why even bring it up in the 1st place unless you are just hating?
There is a big difference in showing support and just being ignorant. Mayweather can show his support for African American players without having to drag Jeremy Lin into it.
Every time I tell the fans something good about Floyd and what he does for homeless people, and charity, he follows that up with some ignorant Twitter tweets like this. Here is what Floyd tweeted yesterday, ”Other countries get to support/cheer their athletes and everything is fine. As soon as I support Black American athletes, I get criticized.” Nobody is criticizing Floyd for supporting African American athletes. What is being criticized and questioned is why did he have to drag Jeremy Lin into this?
When Lebron James signed a contract with the Miami Heat for six years for 110 million dollars, I didn’t see any Asian people talking noise about that. Another of Floyd’s tweets said the following, ” Wow what a country.” What about this country Floyd? The fans that buy your tickets show you support. Guess what, a lot of Asians bought tickets and bought PPV’s to your fights as well.
A person can show their support to whoever they wish. He can support them by going to their games and cheering for them. He can support their charities. He can support their interests. Does he have to show support for black players by dragging Jeremy Lin into the fold? I would say….no.
