San Antonio- Rising star, Nonito Donaire dominated the fight over Wilfred Vasquez Jr over twelve rounds at the San Antonio Alamdome, but had to settle for split decision victory and a vacant WBO super bantamweight title. Not a bad day at the office, all things considered.
?I wasn?t happy with my performance,? said Donaire after the fight showing his left hand that was bloody and still in wraps:? I couldn?t do what Robert wanted me to do because of my hand. We have to go back to a drawing board and see what we can do.?
Judge Ruben Garcia scored the fight 115- 112 for Vasquez Jr, overruled by Ivan Martinez and Don Drella who both scored the fight 117-110 for Donaire who won by split decision. The most surprising thing about the fight is that one judge scored the fight in Favor of Vasquez Jr.
Nonito Donaire started fast pressing the action behind a stiff jab. It was obvious from the onset Donaire was faster and more skilled. Vasquez was very defensive in the second stanza as well, but it did not slow down Nonito who kept firing hard shots beginning with a jab. Nonito hurt Vasquez with lead left hook on the side of the head early in the third, but Puerto Rican fighter was able to weather the storm and get of the round. It was all Donaire in the fourth; he landed crosses and hooks and a picture perfect left uppercut that snapped his opponent?s head back. Vasquez finally landed a right hand in the fifth round because he began to use his jab. Was it enough to win the round? Inspired by his success in the fifth Vasquez Jr pressed forward in the sixth, firing stiff jab followed by a right hand. Vasquez upped his out put and won the round.
