PUT YOUR MONEY ON MAYWEATHER/ALVAREZ FOR CINCO DE MAYO

It has become clear as day that negotiations for the much anticipated superfight between WBO Welterweight champion and Ring magazine?s #1 pound for pound boxer Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2 with 38 KO?s) and WBC Welterweight champion and Ring magazine?s #2 pound for pound boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0 with 26 KO?s) have once again fallen apart. This time the ?reason? is over the purse split, but this author has been of the belief for a while that the only two people that have really ever wanted this fight to happen are Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao.

Bob Arum and Floyd Mayweather Jr. might hate each other, but they have much in common and namely it?s their favorite color: green. They both love money and hate taking risks. Throw in the fact that Arum lost out on huge paydays when Floyd bought out his contract with Bob and Arum?s hatred for Floyd?s advisor Al Haymon and it?s really not shocking that the fight hasn?t and may never happen.

It has also been this author?s belief that Floyd never truly planned on fighting a non Mexican on Cinco de Mayo (May 5th for all you Espanol challenged folks out there). It never made sense for a black guy to insist on facing an Asian on Cinco de Mayo. I believe that Mayweather and his business partner Leonard Ellerbe use feelers and leak certain potential fighters out to the public through the media to see how it is received.

Mexican American and former IBF Super Featherweight and current WBA/WBO interim Lightweight champion Robert Guerrero?s name was floating around for a little while and after that went over like a lead balloon, they shifted their focus to current WBC Junior Middleweight champion Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez (39-0-1 with 29 KO?s). The public will be more accepting of Mayweather facing Alvarez and the fact that he is Mexican, is under the Golden Boy banner, and available for a fight on Cinco de Mayo leads me to believe that he will be Floyd?s next opponent.

Alvarez represents a decent challenge for Floyd given the fact that he is very young, undefeated, strong, and talented. Canelo has a huge and growing fan base south of the border and that translates into mucho dinero vis-?-vis pay per view revenue. The only thing that Floyd cares more about than money is his undefeated record, which in actuality is related to money because he utilizes it in order to help market himself and keep the colossal paydays rolling in. Alvarez on paper appears to be a good challenge for Floyd, but Floyd?s timing outside the ring is as brilliant as it is inside the ring. Mayweather knows that Alvarez is as green as the WBC belt they each hold, and as stated earlier —green is Floyd?s favorite color.
