Much ado about a “tweet”.
As the gullible many together with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. supporters rejoice their man’s “bravado” in “tweeting” a challenge to nemesis Manny Pacquiao to fight him on May 5 — even calling him a “punk”– I could not help but shake my head in disbelief at how easily people can be swayed by media manipulation these days.
So.. Mayweather “tweeted”: ?Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out. Let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see. My jail sentence was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up punk,? (@floydmayweather on Twitter)
And?
I didn’t know fights were negotiated on Twitter these days. I also wonder what the big fuss is about this “tweet” since Mayweather has called out Pacquiao many times before in different forms of media.
Allow me to enumerate: Press conferences, check! Matching contradiction a few weeks after blaming the media saying “they put words in his mouth”, when there’s video proof that he said it, check! On TV at ESPN and Sports talk shows, check! On Sirius Satellite Radio, check! On UStream, check! (with bonus racial slurs). On Youtube, check! On Facebook, check!
So what’s so special about this that people are so impressed?
Is this how courage really is measured these days? By being a “Twitter thug”?
Before the Mayweather “hugnutters” go ballistic, and like I’ve said before, I definitely agree with the fact that Arum has been feeding Pacquiao “in-house” Top Rank opponents, because he wants to fatten his pockets and that he has no intentions of making the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight on May 5. Greed, grudge, Grinch.. whatever you want to call it, Arum has his reasons and he definitely holds a huge responsibility for this fight not happening.
With that said, I also believe that Mayweather and Golden Boy do not have real intentions of fighting Pacquiao on May 5th either, which is why I encouraged those who are outraged by the recent turn of events regarding this saga, to boycott each fighter’s next fights if they are not against each other.
Force both fighters and their promoters’ hands to finally get together and get this fight done by not buying their BS cards.
Taking sides won’t accomplish the goal, if that goal is to see this Pacquiao-Mayweather fight happen.
But to blame this solely on Arum or Pacquiao, and to hail Mayweather for his actions, is as naive as those who say the opposite.
What has Mayweather really done to make this fight happen?

If I tweet tonight that I’m challenging Mayweather to a fight and he doesn’t respond, does that mean he’s ducking me? Give me a break? What are we, in 5th grade?
And now you got writers like ESPN’s Dan Rafael legitimizing Mayweather’s “tweet” like it’s how negotiations should be done. Wait, maybe I should tweet Rafael too and call him a “punk”? Or maybe not. That’s not my style.
In response to Mayweather’s challenge, members of Team Pacquiao like Wakee Salud went on our colleague Snow Badua’s DZSR Sports Radio 918 program in the Philippines today and issued these statements and comments:
Salud: “Tinanong ko si MANNY PACQUIAO kung sino gusto niya kalaban— sabi niya sa BISAYA… SI FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. daw.”
Translation: “I asked Manny Pacquiao who he wanted as his opponent. He said in ‘bisaya’ (Filipino dialect) that he wanted Floyd Mayweather, Jr.”
A key member of Team Pacquiao also expressed that they are not even taking Mayweather’s tweet seriously and stated that if he really wants to fight Pacquiao, that they would send a formal offer, contract or proposal, instead of going on the internet.
TEAM PACQUIAO’S STATEMENT per Snow Badua:
“We don’t take MAYWEATHER’S tweet seriously, and are always ready to fight the undefeated AMERICAN anytime.
Sign the contract, sign a statement. If you really want the fight, we say yes.”
I thought I have seen it all in regard to this match-up. Now it seems like people have lost their minds and exasperated fans, bloggers and wannabe “know-it-alls” alike, are flip-flopping by the day and are all in a state of hysteria.
So what if they don’t fight on May 5th? It’s not the end of the world, nor does it mean they can’t fight at the end of the year or even in 2013. So you’re telling me you guys have been holding your breaths? You should’ve listened to me back in late Novemer 2009.
How about trying to listen to me now?
If you ask me, just chill. Relax. Don’t believe the hype. Smarten up. When contracts are signed, then, and only then, you can get your hopes up. This fight will happen. Maybe not when we all want it to, but that has passed already anyway. This fight is 2 years over-flipping-due!
Well, if you want to play the blame game, blame all of them! Because, truly, how can you hail anyone of them? They are all making this fight difficult to make… you sad little disgruntled boxing fan you.
