There was only one man on Floyd Mayweather Jr.?s mind on Wednesday afternoon as he addressed the media inside of his personal boxing gym. Scheduled for a May 5th ring return at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mayweather has been calling for a clash against his rival Manny Pacquiao for the past week in hopes of giving the boxing public the super fight it has craved for over two years running.
Sitting on the ringside apron as questions began being directed his way, Mayweather was asked how he would expect a clash between him and Pacquiao to play out if such a scenario ever took place and he seems to see his share of weaknesses in his fellow champion.
?He?s a pressure fighter but there?s a lot of mistakes that he makes,? Mayweather stated of Pacquiao. ?You can?t make those mistakes with Floyd Mayweather. If you make those mistakes you have to pay. Not saying that he hasn?t earned the right to face Floyd Mayweather, it?s just so crazy that a guy can just pop up out of nowhere and become such an amazing fighter.?
Junior was then asked if he did consider Pacquiao the second best fighter in the world but he seemed unsure, pointing to Manny?s recent struggle with Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12th.
Pacquiao would edge out a majority-decision in his trilogy bout with the Mexico City stalwart yet he absorbed some telling blows along the way and wasn?t able to mount a sustained offensive attack until the second half of the fight.
Floyd Jr. feels that the wrong man was awarded the victory on that night.
?Speaking honestly, I thought Marquez won the last fight easily,? stated Mayweather. ?Easily, yes. You can put the fight on mute and just look at it. I thought [Marquez] out-boxed him real easy. One guy was putting pressure but not landing and another guy is not taking any punishment and landing basically at will. Like I said before, this sport is tainted.?
On a side note, recent reports have surfaced stating the Mayweather reached out to Pacquiao last night to discuss the possibility of a fight, to which Manny replied that he is ready ‘anytime’, only insisting on a 50/50 split.
Interesting news but it’s somewhat hard to be optimistic at this point.
