And then there are those in the know who believe that Super fight between Manny Pacman Pacquiao and Floyd Money Mayweather is only a dream, a mirage in the desert. I asked Rachel Donaire if she thought this fight was ever going to happen. She said no, but if it did happen?
?Pacquiao has to win it,? said Mrs. Donaire:? I feel Mayweather has been picking his opponents and I think he is scared to fight some one who is a southpaw.?
I asked boxing historian and Showtime color commentator, Al Bernstein to shed some light on this situation.
?To my way of thinking it?s probably not going to happen on May 5th or early June,? said Bernstein:? The only other time this year it could happen would be later in the year, but then Floyd Mayweather has to serve ninety days sentence and whether they can get it together for later in the year, I don?t know, and if it doesn?t happen later in the year, I am thinking it?s not going to happen.? More and more experts express similar opinions arguing that if this fight was ever going to happen it would have happened by now.
?And the world will go on spinning on its axes,? continued Al Bernstein:? I think we?ll all lead meaningful lives if they don?t fight but it?d be nicer if they would. The main reason I?d like to see them fight is because the mainstream media has fixated on that fight as the state of boxing. That?s the only reason I care about them fighting at this juncture. If they don?t, the world is not going to end, but the reason it?s important is because even though boxing has produced all these great fights over and over again, every month, the mainstream media doesn?t cover them. So they have this vision, this tag line- Boxing is in trouble and look at the demonstration; they can?t even make the biggest fight out there. So, that?s the main reason I?d like to see them finally make the fight.?
It is worth noting that congressman, Manny Pacquiao has just celebrated his thirty third birthday. His political career is in full swing, but his last performance against rival, Juan Manuel Marquez has raised a lot of concerns among his countless loyal fans. Is he past his prime? Not a spring chicken himself, Floyd Money Mayweather is thirty five. Not worried about politics Floyd doesn?t seem to be able to stay out of trouble with the law. How much longer would fans even care about this showdown?
?I used to think that Manny Pacquiao was going to win that fight,? continued Bernstein when I spoke with him at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas last Saturday:? I was actually pretty convinced of that because of the number of punches he throws, the angles he uses. He may still win, but his performance against Juan Manuel Marquez has really disappointed me for a couple of different reasons. He didn?t show us all the things he has done before. So a key opponent made him change. Well, if Juan Manuel Marquez made him change from what he was doing in the last few years then I think it?s very likely Floyd Mayweather would too. So I would lean towards Mayweather in this fight now where I leaned towards Pacquiao before.?
Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum often says that a big fight needs to bake in the oven for a while in order to obtain maximum flavor. In this case however, I am afraid it could get burned.
