Following a long layoff, Sonsona has once again focused on his boxing career and was impressive in his comeback last Oct. 15 against Mexican youngster Carlos Jacobo.
Sonsona was a bit rusty, but he still had the speed and showed some maturity. The General Santos native knocked down Jacobo in the eighth round and went on to win by unanimous decision in their 10-round fight at the Hoops Dome.
Although Fulgencio hasn?t fought for a title in his career, he has fought some tough opponents in the past. He once faced International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Abner Mares, Mexican prospect Antonio Escalante and unbeaten up-and-comer Yenifel Vicente.
Fulgencio has an impressive slate of 19-5-1 with 12 knockouts and is on a four-fight win streak.
Sonsona, on the other hand, also has an imposing record of 15-1-1 with 12 knockouts.
Sonsona was once touted as the next big thing in boxing in the Philippines when he captured the WBO super flyweight crown in 2009 against veteran titleholder Jose Lopez in Canada.

However, after winning the title, Sonsona slacked off and was stripped of his title after tipping the scales overweight in his first title defense against Alejandro Hernandez. Sonsona was lucky and escaped with a draw.
Sonsonsa was given another opportunity by his handler Sammy Gello-ani with another title shot, but Sonsona was demolished by Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. by a fourth-round knockout in their world title fight for the vacant WBO super bantamweight belt in Puerto Rico in 2010.
