John’s response: Michael, thank you for your kind words. I’d have to give Bread the writer of the year for BTalk he’s been consistently on point the entire year. I’d have to go with a prime Fernando Vargas over Antonio Margarito at 154 only due to the fact that Antonio was never much of a threat at 154. His best performances were at 147, and a huge black cloud has been “casted” over those performances. Vargas is a big junior middleweight; Margarito is a small junior middleweight. I’d pick Vargas by late stoppage. My top 5 fighters with the best stamina off the top of my head: 1) Aaron Pryor 2) Jake LaMotta 3) Floyd Mayweather Jr. 4) Manny Pacquiao 5) Antonio Margarito The current fighters placed in this list could’ve competed in the 15 round era easily. Pryor and LaMotta speak for themselves. Their gas tanks were unbelievable. Mayweather’s main asset is his stamina and conditioning, Floyd is always sharp and is never fatigued in the late rounds of a fight. Pacquiao and Margarito get their place on the list for their ability to throw over 100 punches a round, and come out for round 12 as if it were the 1st.
I just read your interview with Paul “The Punisher” Williams, and it sounds like G Leon wrote your questions for you. I know you want to impress your boss and possibly get promoted in his company, but that don’t mean that you have to become biased to advance. We all know that G Leon advises or manages Lara, and for that reason you seem overly critical of Williams’ victory over Lara. You seemed very emotional and appeared to not be professional enough to give Williams a fair interview. The bottom line is Williams won the fight in the same manner he won his fight vs marques. QUIT HATIN. CBoss John’s response: I wasn’t trying to impress anyone. The fact that Paul Williams clearly lost the fight, and chose to fight a nobody next instead of fighting Lara again is beyond comprehension. In an interview, I try to ask the questions that need to be asked. I doubt me asking Williams if he really felt he won, would have impressed G. The fact of the matter is Paul Williams will not have any credibility until he gets back in the ring with Lara, and he is clearly ducking him. Many felt Martinez got robbed against Williams in their first fight, and Williams got back in the ring with him. Why is he so reluctant to get back in with Lara? Williams is done and may even lose on the 21st of February.
Hey John Thanks! I love the Boxingtalk mailbag. 2 of the writers seem to favor Mayweather, the other 2 seem to favor Pacquaio. Forget being neutral, this brings in ratings, so keep up the mailbag in-fighting…! Mayweather is really an excellent fighter, but he just can’t go the full 12 rounds anymore, which Pacquaio may exploit. This guy won two fights with legal sucker punches (Ortiz, Gatti) that resulted in knockdowns very early in fight, which changed things in the 2nd half of fight. After that, Mayweather dominates by claiming you are a “front runner”. In fact due to these two fights, his KO/TKO percentage should be lower than what is on record. So he’s a lesser threat to any future fighters. I love the Gatti fight, Gatti yells “BULLSHIT” after the idiot referee has the gall call a knockdown against Gatti, how the hell did Gatti get up after getting hit with a free 3 PUNCH COMBO! Also, they claim Ortiz “quit” the fight. So did Roger! Roger “quit” on behalf of Mayweather during the Zab Judah fight. What competent trainer walks in the ring of a fight risking an official lost to his fighter? Roger had no answers for Mayweather between rounds. That’s “quitting” to me, and you will never win Trainer of the Year like that. That was a rough and tough fight that Mayweather got lucky in. Pacquaio may not be as skilled, but he is rougher and mentally more determined than Judah, let me tell you. LOL Pete
