2011 was a pretty remarkable year for Los Mochis’ Jorge Arce.
Thought to be damaged goods heading into his May challenge for Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.?s WBO junior featherweight crown, Arce instead turned the tables and produced one of the year?s biggest upsets inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Dropped in the fourth round, Arce would work his way back into the fight through sheer pressure and will, ultimately pounding Vazquez along the ropes in the twelfth and final round and forcing referee Joe Cortez to call a halt to the bout
Arce followed that performance by getting revenge against South Africa’s Simphiwe Nongqayi in September via 4th round TKO and finished up his year by decisioning Indonesia?s Angky Angkota in November to capture to vacant WBO bantamweight crown.
Now 32 years old, Arce has stated that this coming year will likely be his last and feels that if he can get past his next fight, a February 18th rematch with Lorenza Parra, that he would love a crack at his buddy Nonito Donaire.
?I?ve won five championships, which weren?t purchased, but won in the ring,? Arce said in a NotiFight.com piece by Ernesto Castellanos. ?I will defend my bantamweight title on February 18 in Durango and then look to face one of the best out there, Nonito Donaire, if he beats Vazquez. Everyone says that Nonito is invincible, but boxing is about style, and I know I can beat him.?
Arce fought Parra to a draw in September of 2010 in a fight many felt should have went against him.
Donaire?s next venture will see him land in San Antonio, Texas, when he meets up with the aforementioned Vazquez in an HBO-televised showcase.
