Floyd Mayweather Jr. has chosen an inopportune time to shut his usually constantly flapping gums. Suddenly, as rumors abound that Robert “Ghost” Guerrero is going to be tapped as Mayweather’s May 5 Las Vegas opponent and Manny Pacquiao is pounding the table in the Philippines demanding Floyd’s scalp, Mayweather is running silent if not deep. Why, that is what inquiring minds want to know? Isn’t Mayweather his own Big Bossman, the baller and shotcaller of his own career? Then why is Lenny Ellerbe, his loyal liege, out in public pooh-poohing Mayweather-Pacquiao when Pacman has publicly stated that he will demand that his promoter, Bob Arum, deliver the “Money” Super Fight? On Tuesday, in Manila Pacquiao told Philboxing.com’s Steady Eddie Alinea, the Pinoy Idol will tell octogenarian Arum to take his “wish list” of foes–meaning Lamont Peterson, Tiny Tim Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez and redoubtable Miguel I’m No Angel Cotto–and toss it into File 13, aka the nearest garbage bin. In the middle of all his, Mayweather has laryngitis? With the Floyd-Manny soap opera blowing more bubbles than ever before, Mayweather has nothing to say? Where’s the fearless, peerless Mayweather who exclaimed, “Pacquiao…you’re next?” Mayweather’s bully pulpit is wide open and he doesn’t mount the rostrum? Which comes around to the bottom line here. Ever think that Mayweather and his Brain Trust cannot even comprehend of Floyd bouncing into the ring against Manny, who could very well knock him out, and then bounce into jail in Las Vegas for his agreed to incarceration? I mean, making $40 million in one night is wonderful but a guy might want to celebrate such a munificent paynight rather than check into the Clark County Detention Center right after. I congratulate Guerrero and his hyperactive pr aide Molto Mario Serrano if all their shouting lands a Mayweather fight and big payday on May 5. But, if they do fight, Guerrero’s nickname will be haunting the promotion as the Gilroy, Calif., fighter does not have “a Ghost” of chance of winning.
