Pacquiao invites Bacolod mayor to Las Vegas rematch vs. Morales

The Filipino boxing hero, Emmanuel “Pacman” Pacquiao, has invited Mayor Evelio Leonardia to witness his return-bout with Mexican Erik “El Terrible” Morales in Las Vegas, Nevada on Jan. 21, a press release from the City Hall said yesterday.

In his letter, dated Dec. 1 from his hometown General Santos City, Pacquiao said, “I need the support and prayers of my countrymen to win. Your presence at the ringside certainly will be a source of encouragement and can boost my morale. I strongly urge Your Honor to please accommodate this request”.

Pacquiao also said that he was “happy to be bestowed such a distinct privilege” as Bacolod’s adopted son. Pacquiao, who was declared by Leonardia an “adopted son of Bacolod” during the city’s Charter Day Celebration in October, said he considers this mega buck fight very important “as it can make or break my career”, the press release said.

In a meeting with Leonardia and his manager Wakee Salud after the SEA Games opening ceremonies in Manila, Pacquiao fondly recalled the warm and royal treatment he was given by the Bacole?os during the Charter Day Parade, the press release also said.

Pacquiao’s prize money in this grudge fight is US $2 million but with pay-per-view television receipts and other income, Salud estimates that the Filipino champion could gross as much as US $4 million, the press release said.

Before the Las Vegas fight, Pacquiao is also expected to launch his new recording album featuring songs on patriotism and his philosophy in life.

Leonardia said he is seriously considering the invitation and he is assuring the people of Bacolod that, if ever he goes to Las Vegas, it will be at his personal expense and at no cost to the city, like all of his previous trips abroad, the press release said.*
