Amir Khan’s ambition is as unashamedly naked as Barack Obama’s.
As he stood on Capitol Hill on Thursday he announced: ‘I will be the first British boxer to become the greatest pound-for-pound fighter on Earth.’
If it really is all in the timing then the boy from Bolton will grow into the supreme lord of the ring.
He was speaking on his 25th birthday and he has given himself three years to lay claim to the Holy Grail of prize-fighting, which is currently disputed by Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jnr.
He says: ‘I intend to go out at 28, at the very top.’
Not only unashamed but unafraid, he has no qualms about challenging the legend of the fighting hero most recently and most fervently held in the affections of the British people.
‘I am going to achieve what Ricky Hatton couldn’t do,’ says Khan. ‘”The Hitman” was a great fighter and I loved watching him in action. But he fell just short of becoming the pound-for-pound man. So did Joe Calzaghe, even though he was a terrific boxer.
