Local boxing notebook: Oxnard fighters big part of card

All Star Boxing Promotions must have a thing for Oxnard fighters. It seems that every time the Montebello-based company promotes a show, a handful of boxers from Oxnard are listed to fight on a card.

On Saturday night, All Star Boxing will promote a professional boxing/ amateur mixed martial arts show at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles.

Five boxers from Oxnard will fight in separate four-round bouts. A total of nine professional bouts are scheduled on the “Civic Disobedience” card.

Lightweight Herbert Acevedo (5-0, 3 KOs) will fight Wilmington’s Ramon Flores (3-13-3, 3 KOs), while lightweight Oscar Diaz (1-0) will take on Jesus Hernandez (0-0-1), who fights out of Los Angeles.

Erik Ruiz, a 2010 Oxnard High graduate, will take on Mexico City’s Manuel Machorro (0-4-1). Ruiz is 2-0 with one knockout.

Junior welterweight Carlos Rodriguez (1-0) of Oxnard will take on Luis Hernandez, who will be making his professional debut. Javier Garcia (6-2-1, 6 KOs), nephew of former world champion Robert Garcia, was scheduled to also fight on the card, but his opponent backed out. A replacement is being sought.

In the main event, Ricky Duenas (9-1, 3 KOs) of El Monte will take on Vardan Gasparyan (13-2-5, 7 KOs) of Glendale in an eight-round junior welterweight bout.

Tickets are on sale at the door for $50 or by calling (626) 255-8699. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the amateur MMA portion of the card scheduled to begin at 6. The boxing portion is scheduled to begin at 7.

Rodela sparring with Khan

David Rodela was featured on HBO’s critically-acclaimed boxing series “24/7: Pacquiao-Marquez.”

Rodela was one of Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partners in the Filipino’s preparation against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Because of the solid work he put in against Pacquiao, Rodela is now sparring against WBA and IBF super lightweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KOs) at the famed Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.

Khan will defend his titles against Lamont Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KOs) on Dec. 10 at the Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The bout will be televised on HBO’s World Championship Boxing.

Peterson fought Ventura’s Victor Ortiz last December. Despite being knocked down twice in the bout, Peterson was able to rally in the second half, fighting to a 10-round majority decision draw.

Shea training in Ventura

Numerous world champions and contenders have come to Ventura County to receive the best training and sparring in the local gyms. Add another fighter to that list ? only this time it is a female fighter.

Featherweight contender Maureen Shea has been training at the Knuckleheadz Gym in Ventura. Shea, who traveled across the country from Bronx, N.Y., is trainingfor her WBC featherweight championship bout on Dec. 10 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Shea, (17-2, with 11 KOs) who has won her last four bouts in a row, is being trained by Joseph Hoss, who also works in the corner of Ortiz.

Centeno returns Dec. 1

Unbeaten junior middleweight Hugo Centeno returns to action on Dec. 1 at Club Nokia at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.

The 2009 Oxnard High graduate will take on David Lopez (3-6-3) in a scheduled six-round bout.

In his last bout earlier this month, Centeno (10-0, 6 KOs) won a hard-fought six-round unanimous decision over Hector Orozco at the Fantasy Springs Spa and Casino in Indio.

Centeno has won his last four bouts by decision after beginning his professional career with six straight first-round knockouts. Barring a change in opponent on Dec. 1, Centeno has yet to fight an opponent with a winning record.
