In the hot, dusty town of Ciudad Hidalgo, Michoacan the main church, La Iglesia de Perpetuo Socorro (The Church of Perpetual Help), featured a rare, boxing-oriented sermon this past Sunday.
Father Arroyo, the head priest of the parish, took his time at the pulpit to deliver a sermon aimed at reaching the hearts and minds of those with November 12th’s Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez clash on the brain. The odd choice of sermon had me immediately reaching for my pen and notebook to catch as much of it as humanly possible.
“As most of you know,” Father Arroyo told the packed church, “two very popular boxers will be in combat this coming Saturday.”
I looked around, noticing the men’s eyes immediately direct themselves to the good Father.
