Now, don?t read this title, and suddenly think I am on the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. bandwagon. He is still mostly the result of hype and maneuvering, however, he has done many of the right things to ensure that when he starts taking on the elite fighters, he will be as ready as possible. He could win multiple belts, and even go an insane a streak, and still only break even with his famous father. He has some things in common with Dad, good things like body punching, not wasting a lot of punches (anymore), and a pretty good chin.
True, he also shares some bad traits with Chavez Sr. He openly welcomes the ?rah rah Viva Mexico? nonsense. If he really cares about his people, he should encourage them to be individuals, and not pander to them in order to help fleece them out of hard earned money for small fights. He also defers to his promoter in all important questions. However, those things are the order of the day, and Chavez Jr. is one of dozens doing the same thing. Truth be told, there are some categories in which Chavez Jr. has already gained more of my respect than Chavez Sr.
1) Immediate rematches ? True, Sebastian Zbik deserved one, and did not get it? but the Top Rank takeover means justice at the higher levels is a thing of the past. When he was being brought up however, he had two controversial outcomes, his draw with Carlos Molina, which doesn?t look so bad now, and his win over Matt Vanda. Many people thought he lost both fights. Yet, guess what his very next fights were in both cases, rematches with Molina and Vanda, where he won more convincingly. Granted the win over Molina was not exactly convincing, but he did much better than the first time. He also beat Vanda without question in the rematch.
