In the first two fights, Juan Manuel Marquez said he was robbed from victory with a draw and a decision loss to arch-rival Manny Pacquiao.
The third time, he may have a case.
Marquez?s team filed on to the dais at Saturday?s post-fight press conference like crime victims watching the suspect get off scot-free on a technicality. Marquez came up to the podium, thanked his team and fans in Spanish, and expressed disappointment and frustration in the result.
But his most poignant words came from him in uneasy English to a crowded press room: ?Everyone knows what happened. What do I have to do for judges to win a fight??
?I am happy with my performance tonight, honestly,? said Marquez to reporters through a translator after losing yet another controversial majority decision to Pacquiao. ?I don?t know what I need to do to change the minds of judges. I have to sit down with my family and my camp and decide if I will continue in this sport or just retire from the sport.
?I tried to make a lot of changes for this fight,? said Marquez, ?and I prepared a lot for his style.?
?I am very frustrated,? said Marquez?s trainer Nacho Berenstein. ?I feel bad for Juan, for Manny, for everyone with decisions like this. The real winner is Juan Manuel Marquez, not Manny Pacquiao.?
Manny would come out later, after attention to a cut on his eye, but Marquez wrapped up his statements with acknowledgment: ?I would like to tell you all that yes, it could happen, and yes, we did it, as the fans were chanting in the last round. We won. Only three people didn?t see the same thing.?
