At the risk of being branded unpatriotic, a poor excuse for an American citizen, I don’t share Floyd Mayweather Junior’s fake outrage about Manny Pacquiao striking it rich in the USA and then taking much of his booty back to his homeland.
As Mayweather knows well, Pacquiao pays more in American tax revenue than most very wealthy citizens The IRS has a 30 percent withholding requirement on his American earned revenue and his new accounting firm is supposed to be cleaning up his back tax years with Uncle Sam…
I second that Pinoy politician’s call for Pacquiao to have a “thank you and goodbye” fight in Manila as his final or near final fight. But give Megamanny credit he doesn’t need the suggestion. They can call it “Thrilla In Manila 2” and the opponent can be Joe Beanbag, it doesn’t matter. Not to mention the public relations lift such an event could give Pacman’s presidential plans. Manny from Malacanang, we like to say.
All I ask, Manny, is to be an honorary Filipino citizen and then be made Ambassador to Brazil. If not Brazil, then make the postmaster in Boracay Beach…

I stood on a subway station platform this morning, speaking with a Brooklyn lawyer named Sam Gregory. He happens to be an ardent boxing fan and he thinks that Pacman finds a way to beat the undefeated “Money.” While I appreciate the barrister’s enthusiasm, I reminded him that you can’t beat an opponent who won’t sign a contract…
Irish fighters and Irish American fighters battling on St. Patrick’s Day cards used to be a staple of Boston and New York fights shows back in the day. Lou DiBella may revive the concept with Irishman Matthew Macklin, a new DBE signee who tells one and all he “sees something,” a chink in the armor of middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. DiBella adds that Macklin has a pal who is an owner of 18 Irish saloons around New York which makes for lubricated fight ticket selling…
All this patter about how Darren Barker was “disrespected by all the media before he got stopped in 11 by Martinez in Atlantic City in 11 rounds is hogwash. Only one British newspaper bothered to send a fight scribe to New Jersey and that was esteemed veteran Jeff Powell, the Daily Mail man. Actually, Barker got more prefight props in America than he did back home…
If I was an ambitious referee, say 40 and under, I’d relocate to Nevada where they’ve got to restock the pool of refs. Nevada sorely needs new blood in the referee’s pool unless they can clone Kenny Bayless…
My ties to undefeated, two time world champ Joan Guzman, who has only ever lost to the scales as a pro, are well known. But I think Guzman, same age as Mayweather at 34, will win one more world title. The Dominican Dandy returns to the at the Hotel Jaragua in Santo Domingo on Nov. 18. At 140 or even welterweight, Guzman has a real chance to beat anyone IF he remains a faithful weight watcher.
How’s that for shilling like Bob Dylan?…
