No controversy, judges were right:WBO

RAMON Garcia?s camp felt that they were robbed of a victory because of a hometown decision last Saturday night in Bacolod City.

They believe the judges made an incorrect judgment when they awarded Filipino Donnie Nietes the unanimous decision win, making him the new World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight champion.

American judges Lisa Giampa and Carlos Ortiz saw Nietes winning by a huge margin with scores of 118-110 and 117-111, respectively, while Filipino judge Danrex Tapdasan scored the bout closer at 115-113.

Despite Gracia?s accusations of the judges being unfair, WBO?s Leon Panoncillo, who was at ringside in the ?Pinoy Pride 9? event to supervise the world title fight, firmly believes that the judges did nothing wrong.

?There was no controversy. It was a matter of what the judges saw. Whoever racked up more points, won. Donnie had more clear punches. And although the champ (Garcia) was more aggressive, he was not that effective,? the WBO Asia-Pacific, Oriental and Africa Zone chairman told Sun.Star Cebu.

Panoncillo felt that Nietes did enough in the early going of the world title fight at the University of St. La Salle Gym to stay ahead on the judges? scorecards.

?It was a very close fight. Donnie did all he could do to get ahead in the scorecards.
