Fans chant bull****, but Donaire easily defeats Narvaez in New York

Moments ago at the WaMu Theater inside of Madison Square Garden in New York, bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire easily defended his WBC and WBO bantamweight belts with an uneventful unanimous decision over unwilling super flyweight champion Omar Narvaez. Scores of 120-108 were read across the board for Donaire, who, despite all his attempts, was never able to get his offense going because of Narvaez?s defensive nature.

Donaire is regarded as one of the sport?s top fighters and he shouldn?t be knocked for the lack of action in the bout. It was Narvaez who put up a defensive shell throughout the fight, leaving Donaire with little room to impress as he picked his spots and rolled on towards the win.

Speaking with HBO?s Max Kellerman after the fight, Donaire took a jab at the Argentinean-born Narvaez by comparing him to some fellow champions from his native land.

?I did my best,? said Donaire. ?I?m sorry that it didn?t come out the way that I wanted. You have great champions, [Sergio] Martinez, [Marcos] Maidana, and they all come to fight. He didn?t come to fight tonight. We expected to do more.? Advertisement

You could see how frustrated Donaire was during the fight, even telling his trainer Robert Garcia in between rounds eleven and twelve that he was ?bored?. The crowd inside of the arena also showed their disdain, with chants of ‘bull****’ echoing throughout the building late in the fight.

Giving his take on trying to figure the Narvaez puzzle out, Donaire was adamant that he did all that he could.

?I wanted him to open up, but he wouldn?t move. As long as he had that shell up, he wouldn?t move regardless of where you went. I didn?t mind getting hit as long as I got my punches in. I guess I know how Pacquiao felt against Clottey,? said Donaire, who landed 99 out of 666 punches during the bout compared to 74 out of 299 for Narvaez.

Donaire finished up by mentioning that the next move for him will be up in weight to the junior featherweight class, where more intriguing fights and better action will await him and us.
