WRITER Percy Della, bosom buddy of my dear friend Recah Trinidad, penned a very beautiful and analytical column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on the effect of the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fiasco on the future of boxing, a sport whose popularity he said is threatened by the more exciting mixed martial arts combat called the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC).
Boxing fans who paid almost $60 to watch the bout on closed circuit television were understandably upset over the questionable knockout that Mayweather scored over Ortiz in the fourth round of what could have been an exciting encounter between a boxer and a fighter and Percy expressed fears that based on the reaction of people he knew, boxing could lose its fans to the UFC.
Maybe yes, as a knee jerk reaction and to manifest frustration over an uncompleted enjoyment of a sports spectacle.
But will boxing lose its fans to the UFC or will it totally lose out to UFC as a spectator sport?
No, Percy, I don?t think so.
First, there is simply no comparison between boxing and the UFC.
