Tomorrow night, Drian ?Gintong Kamao? Francisco representing Touch Gloves Boxing Gym of Agoncillo, Batangas goes head to head against Michael ?Bruce Lee? Domingo of ALA Gym. This marks a significant change of pace for the Philippine fight scene as we will have two top pinoy fighters facing each other instead of foreign opponents which we have grown accustomed to. The fight dubbed ?Pinoy Warriors? will be held at the Makati Coliseum.
Since the rise of Philippine Boxing with the advent of the G.O.A.T. Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao, local fighters have been developed more and the country has produced other world champions and notable prospects. Previously, we had preferred not to have Filipino vs Filipino bouts and instead opted for our local fighters to face foreigners from Thailand or Mexico. Although they were of different nationalities, it didn?t necessarily mean that they were quality opponents. Most of them were cannon fodder and were not suitable to prepare our pugilists for the world stage. Countries like Mexico and Thailand have always had local fighters facing each other and the Philippines should be no exception. There is a pool of unbelievable boxing talent within the country and thia fight between Drian Francisco and Michael Domingo is a step in the right direction.
Drian Francisco (20-1-1, 16KO), who was undefeated before losing to Thai challenger Tepparith Singwancha, is the favorite to win this fight. He is on a comeback trail following his first ever defeat. Prior to the loss however, Francisco was being heralded as the next best thing in Philippine Boxing. Francisco is a flashy and awkward stylist with speed and power in both hands. He will throw punches from unorthodox angles and will sometimes keep his guard low to bait his opponent into committing to offense, which Francisco then has no problem launching a counter-offensive.
